The Toro DO is located approximately 125 miles northwest of Madrid in the region of Castilla Y Leon. Wines from this area gained commercial prominence during the middle ages and beyond: under the auspices of King Alfonso IX of Leon & Galicia, Toro wine was traded so heavily that it generated enough wealth to build most of the churches in the area; a few hundred years later, it is believed that Columbus chose Toro wine for his voyage to the Americas; and during the Phylloxera plague, Toro was unaffected and gained even more popularity throughout Iberia and around Europe. Building upon this fertile tradition, Casa Maguila makes Angelitos Negros with Tinta de Toro (the local variant of Tempranillo) from vineyards aged between 20 and 40 years. The juice is aged seven months in French and American oak barrels for smooth yet easy drinking experience. A exemplary non-Rioja Tempranillo.
